Meet 92 year old, Aurora Leveroni, aka ‘Nonna Marijuana’- the Italian medicinal weed chef from northern California. Aurora knows that food is medicine. She has a backyard farmacy where she grows various strains of marijuana, which she uses in all her edibles. She runs a genuine mom and pop, garden to table medical marijuana operation.
“Those of us still around now—in our late 80s and 90s—know we were the lucky ones who ate foods that were as nature intended, instead of letting preservatives destroy our bodies’ natural immune systems.” (1) – Nonna Marijuana
Nonna’s signature dish: Chicken Pot-cciatore
“Hearty chicken cacciatore gets turnt up with onions, cremini mushrooms, black and green olives, a dash of wine, and weed.” (2) Here’s the recipe.
Sage advice about marijuana infusions from Nonna: “To make the infusion, you can use butter, olive oil, or coconut oil (though some patients are allergic to coconut oil, so you must ask). Also, be very careful regarding the amount of marijuana you cook with as it’s a powerful medicinal product. Always start out by using just a little bit and then upping the dosage little by little until you find what’s right for a particular patient” (1)
Surprisingly, Nonna has never been high nor has she ever taken as much as a nibble from one of her many hand crafted, marijuana infused dishes. She relies on testers to give her feedback regarding her cannabis culinary creations. Nonna confesses: “Actually, I can’t offer you any information regarding the flavor of marijuana, as I don’t eat it. I only cook with it, so I rely on taste-testers.” (1)
What prompted Nonna to start cooking with marijuana? Although without a doubt her Italian heritage instilled a love of fresh, wholesome food made with love and skill from scratch, it was her daughter Valerie who first introduced her to the idea of combining cannabis and food to create a potent, edible medicine.
Nonna shared: “I had about 75 years of experience in the kitchen before I ever decided to experiment with what I call “nature’s medicinal leaf.” I only started cooking with medical marijuana five years ago. Now I use marijuana as an ingredient in order to help those who are ill and need it to heal themselves, like my daughter Valerie, who uses medical marijuana to control her grand mal seizures.” (1)
You see, Valerie suffered from debilitating, epileptic seizures, and as a result was taking a variety of toxic, side-effect laden pharmaceuticals that weren’t really working. While desperately seeking out alternative treatment protocols, Valerie discovered that marijuana is a clinically proven and effective holistic medicine that routinely eliminates seizures without the devastating side-effects of Big Pharma drugs.
After thoroughly researching cannabis as a seizure control option, Valarie began self-medicating with marijuana. Within a very short time, she was able to ditch all Big Pharma drugs and effectively manage her seizures exclusively with marijuana.
Nonna not only fully supported her daughter’s use of medical marijuana, she became a medical marijuana advocate for all patients who could benefit from using it.
Valeria explains why marijuana is her medicine of choice: “I was suffering a significant number of seizures per day, and I was strung out on pharmaceuticals, they weren’t making any difference. I was desperate, so I started experimenting with medical marijuana and in about 3 1/2 weeks I noticed a difference in my seizures. I stopped taking pharmaceuticals, and started calling cannabis my medicine.” (3)
In fact, Valerie is one of the founders of WAAM (Women/Mens Alliance for Medical Marijuana), a cutting edge group that spearheaded the use of medical marijuana for chronically ill and terminal patients located in Santa Cruz, California. Incredibly, WAAM dispenses organically grown, medical marijuana to qualifying patients and their caregivers on a donation basis.
WAAM Mission Statement: “The Women’s Alliance for Medical Marijuana is a collective of patients and caregivers providing hope, building community and offering medical marijuana on a donation basis. We offer a safe, organic supply of medical marijuana to patients with a doctor’s recommendation for the treatment of terminal and chronic illness.” (4)
Bong Appetit: Nonna “Queen of Marijuana Cuisine” You Tube Star
This is the first in a series of “how to” You Tube videos Nonna agreed to do for Bong Appetit, a new MUNCHIES show focused on cannabis and cuisine. The focus is on teaching medical marijuana patients, via a visual step by step cooking demonstration, the basics of successfully infusing medical marijuana into food.
When asked why she decided to do the YouTube video series, Nonna said, “I knew that with my 80 years of Italian cooking experience and expertise, I could help others incorporate the healing benefits of marijuana into good, nourishing staple foods that I love to prepare with or without marijuana.”
